He knows Your Name

Sherri, according to most baby name sites, means beloved or in Hebrew, dear one. Shereese basically means the exact same thing (thanks mom). So, I guess I'm dearly beloved. Either way, that's the name that was bestowed upon me way back in 1986 (If you did the quick calculations, yes, it's true, I am almost 34).

When I really sit back and think about it, every time someone says my name or when I say my own name, I am being affirmed of how God sees me-- as his beloved.

Growing up with a lukewarm father (you know half in, half out--no shade just the truth), I did not understand my value, I didn't know that I was worth something. For many years I dealt with abandonment issues and I accepted any version of love that someone wanted to give me, regardless of how toxic.

In the bible, someone's name almost always described a feeling, an event, or a tragedy.

Take Naomi, for example, upon the death of her husband and her sons, when she returned to her hometown with Ruth, she told her friends:

“Do not call me Naomi (sweetness); call me Mara (bitter), for the Almighty, has caused me great grief and bitterness. Ruth 1:20 AMP

When the mother of Jabez named him Jabez, she did so because " [she] bore him in pain] 1 Chronicles 4:9. and the list can go on.

But when God names us, he does so with the future in view.

Look at Sarah! When he changed Sarai's name, which meant princess, to Sarah, which means The Princess it was because her God-ordained destiny was to be the mother of many nations (Genesis 17:16), even though at that moment she was struggling to bear a child.

God knew before I was even formed in my mother's womb, that I would need to be reminded that I am his "much loved" daughter. I am finally able to grasp it and things in my life are changing because of it.

You may be saying, Sherri, my name doesn't mean anything spectacular. Well, God is still in the  renaming business and he has a few that you can try on (I wouldn't change your birth certificate though)

Beloved (Ephesians 5:1)

Jewel in His Crown (Isaiah 62:3)

Daughter (1 Corinthians 6:18)

Friend (John 15:14)

Heir (Romans 8:17)

"Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine"
